This painting came from a series of oil paintings that were inspired from my time working and volunteering at the Hollygrove Market and Farm, located in New Orleans’ Hollygrove neighborhood. Customers there often inquire about what times of year particular fruits and vegetables will be available. I thought that making a calendar featuring some of my favorite foods within the months that they can be spotted in farmers markets would be a fun way for me to help locavores keep track of Louisiana’s bountiful and ever-changing food supply. The series was made up of 12 paintings, each representing food available at a particular month in the year.
This May chicken is in the Hollygrove garden on a sunny spring morning, and you can see some seasonal kale peeking through in the background from the community gardening plots.
