SUMMARY:Group Show at Sullivan Gallery
DESCRIPTION:This new show at Sullivan Gallery\, Catscapes and other Hypnagogia\,* is a playful look at the domestic and surreal. While attending grad school at the Maine College of Art\, Stephanie was diagnosed with mild Narcolepsy. This condition had led Stephanie into trouble at school due to the difficulty of staying awake during lectures on Semiotics and such\, but it also has a flipside. Narcolepsy supplies the afflicted with a treasure trove of vivid intrusions of dreams into everyday life.  This body of work explores the conditions of the literal nap\, with oil paintings of Stephanie’s pet cats playing the role of larger-than-life mythological sleep creatures with their magical soporific influence and antics. Paired with the literal reality are India ink drawings of the artist’s inner dream-world in a heterogeneous confluence of thoughts\, memories and visions.

SUMMARY:BrechtFest VI Silent Art Auction
DESCRIPTION:Each year I make a work of art for  for the poster image  New Orleans  BrechtFest event\, an evening devoted to the poems and songs of playwright Bertolt Brecht. At the event itself\, the original art is silent auctioned to benefit Innocence Project New Orleans. This year is particularly special\, as other artists will be joining me in the silent auction. 100% of proceeds from the original art auction will go to IPNO. Read more and buy tickets at brechtfest.com. \nI often refer to art from the Weimar Republic to parody and draw parallels from. This year\, I made my own version of the 1926 George Grosz painting “Eclipse of the Sun”. I am title mine “Eclipse of the Scum”. My oil painting is 24×24″. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Gallery Show - 'OVERFLOW: Ecstatic encounters in the streets of New Orleans'
DESCRIPTION:New oil paintings by Stephanie Reed explore immanence* through the experience of both sublime and quirky street traditions. \n*Immanence: noun \nThe state of being inherent or exclusively existing within something. \nPeople in New Orleans know that the city’s spirit is difficult to describe to those who have not experienced it on the ground\, and we often land on the fact that its character is that of its people – who come together to express themselves in unique and beautiful ways. Many of the paintings in this body of work are at a large\, almost life-sized scale that puts the viewer in the mix for a sense of “being there” in the flow of individuals who collectively shape the distinct magic of this place. \nThis show follows Reed’s previous one at Gallery 600 titled ‘The World without Us’– a contemplative series primarily of river scenes devoid of figures – which reflected the isolated landscape of 2020-2022. ‘OVERFLOW’ celebrates the end of social dormancy imposed by the pandemic\, with the re-blooming of a rich and vibrant culture. \nJune 2023 \nGallery 600 Julia\n600 Julia Street\nNew Orleans\, LA 70130 \nOpening Reception June 3\, 6-8PM\nGallery Hours\nMonday- Saturday 10AM – 3:30PM

SUMMARY:Beadecked: Mardi Gras (Group Show)
DESCRIPTION:For February 2020\, the Gallery is showing a variety of Mardi Gras paintings to mark the crazy and creative season of fun in the city. BEADecked is a group show. Some of our artists belong to Carnival Clubs and Marching Groups\, so there is a true sense of “being there” captured in the art. For one\, Linda Lesperance says that Carnival has as many meanings as there are people who participate. Whether seen from the top of a float or from the neutral ground\, or celebrated at a lavish ball\, Mardi Gras is an important aspect of our New Orleans heritage and one of the reasons our city is so unique and special. A person can watch the same parade at Napoleon Avenue\, on Jackson Avenue or Canal Street and it would not be the same experience. A 4th generation New Orleanian who is a member of Rex does not see Carnival in the same way as a Bourbon Street tourist. \nAs a counterpoint to the city celebration is the rural Courir de Mardi Gras\, held in many Cajun communities of South Louisiana. Although the roots of the celebration can be traced to medieval times\, its modern revival dates to the 1960’s when the Cajun Renaissance embraced local culture\, food\, music and language. On Fat Tuesday in the early morning\, the riders or runners gather to receive instructions from the leader\, Le Capitaine. He usually rides on horseback\, wears a cape and carries a small flag. Others dress in colorful fringed motley with masks often made of decorated wire screening. After he organizes the troop\, the bands begin to play and he leads them on the route. Traditions vary in each town. Some towns have people on horseback\, some on trailers and some on foot. The Capitaine is the first to approach the houses along the route\, to ask permission to enter onto their property. The revelers play a variety of pranks on the farmers and beg for food for the communal gumbo that lies at the end of the route. The prize ingredient is a live chicken\, which is usually thrown into the air for the drunken troop to chase through the muddy yards and fields.  Lafayette’s Herb Roe is the guest artist for this exhibition\, lending his amazing Courir de Mardi Gras paintings for February. \nParticipating Artists:  Camille Barnes\, William B. Crowell\,  Larry “Kip” Hayes\, Diego Larguia\, Linda Lesperance\, Elizabeth McMIllan\, Anne Michael Pappas\, Stephanie Reed\, Don Reggio\, Herb Roe\, Carol Scott

SUMMARY:September Solo Show: Dusk Approaching
DESCRIPTION:Dusk Approaching \nIn her newest series of paintings\, New Orleans artist Stephanie Reed portrays subjects in scenes of solace at the end of the day: locals congregate in bars and clubs\, animals find their resting space\, and skies transform in front of an implied ambling viewer. As evening descends\, bold transitional light cascades through these tranquil vignettes. The implacability of time’s movement underscores the precious smallness of the moments depicted. \nThe opening is will be on the first Saturday of the month\, coinciding with the Julia Street Art Walk.

SUMMARY:Art Opening at 600 Julia Street
DESCRIPTION:Crescent City Instantiate \n*Instantiate (v): \n1. represent as or by an instance.\n2. (of a universal or abstract concept) have an instance;\nbe represented by an actual example.\nRecent oil paintings by New Orleans artist Stephanie Reed recreate moments from her lived experience with a loving kindness and even-handed fidelity to form. Reed transcribes light\, color and shape to canvas in a practice of “being with” scenes she has witnessed/captured that range from quiet solitude to boisterous festivity. In this meditative dive\, time slows and intimate slices of specific worlds unfold\, invoked by visceral layers of brush and palette knife strokes. The paintings bear the accumulative marks of the artist’s patient and persistent gaze doggedly seeking form and memory. Reed’s approach to imagery is sincere but not literal\, and the paintings resist reduction to the merely illustrative and mutate upon closer inspection\, indulging in painterly gestures and layered dynamic abstractions. \n  \nPost-Opening Gratitude:\n \nA big thanks to everyone who made it to the opening. It was so fun and lively!\nHaving a drink\, enjoying friends and art.A big thanks to Balkanique for making the opening so fun and to Carl for sitting in with some clarinet magic!Great turnout- what fun!The artist with her sister.David thought it would be fun to wear the same shirt in the painting! Too bad we weren’t able to bring Kitty to the opening too.Jayne found the painting I did of her!
